I’ve been down this road before. Not subtly necessarily, but also maybe not like this. I’m here tonight being as blunt, even hostile, as I care to be in any post on this site. What I intend is to speak not necessarily o the original reader but to those whom the reader may share this sentiment with, either by a direct link, or by copying any quote you see fit, or just by being emboldened to speak up.
All through 2016 I would encounter, primarily on Facebook, LGB/T people (in the overwhelming majority transwomen) who professed to be conservatives, Republicans, and passionate Trump supporters. Over and over and over again I would try to engage with these women trying to be the voice of reason. Surely you can’t, I would ask, support a person and a party so openly hostile to your basic human equality?
Over and over again they would rationalize, justify, and paper over the very clear evidence and try to insist that Trump was in no way bigoted towards LGB/T people but was actually our great friend. “After all, didn’t you see him with that (upside down) flag?” (a moment that ends up having a great unintended symbolism) they might say, or “Ivanka has tons of gay friends” or some other completely facile bullshit nonsense.
Most of those people are no longer acquainted with me on Facebook, some I kicked to the curb and some withdrew from me. So I generally no longer cross paths with these women but they are still out there. I’ve yet to see any post in a group or on a page where a transwoman, or any other LGB/T person, has said “OMG what did I do? What was I thinking?” No even after the evidence rises to tsunami level they don’t have the self-awareness and intellectual honesty to look in the mirror and confront their enemy.
Witness just the last week or two at the Supreme Court. First comes the city of Houston, defending their decision to extend benefits which accrue to married employees to same sex couples against a suit by Pharisee activists making the ridiculous case that they hold a heckler’s veto over every tax dollar that might be spent on something that violates their doctrines. The (elected) Texas Supreme Court had already sided with the Pharisees and Houston asked SCOTUS to slap that nonsense down. They declined.Yes, technically the case still has steps to go through in Texas and this was somewhat procedural, but the right call is so blindingly obvious that the U.S. Supreme Court could have – and should have – said “don’t act a fool” to Texas and put it to bed. But they didn’t.
Then comes the Masterpiece Cakeshop case in which the only vote in doubt – Anthony Kennedy’s – became a source of grave concern when, during oral arguments, he seemed to parrot some of the more transparent rhetoric of the anti-gay Pharisee lawyers. While it’s true that oral arguments can sometimes be misleading, the universal view on both the left and right is that the gay-equality and non-discrimination position seems to be in serious danger.
The third blow comes this week when they (SCOTUS) declined to hear the appeal of Tameaka Evans of Georgia. Evans was fired for being lesbian and the Court of Appeals found that this was not barred under Title VII, while a different circuit found in a separate case that it does. Such conflict between the circuits typically all but guarantees SCOTUS review but…no. Not this time. How a court that has already established that equal protection under the law means that one is entitled to marry whom they choose, but is in any doubt about whether that same right ensures one must be treated equally in matters of employment would be mystifying had we not known it was coming.
Do you know what would would have prevented this? Voting Democrat. Not just for president but right down the ballot. In the last two years of President Obama’s term, the GOP controlled Senate failed to confirm dozens of judicial nominees, reserving an astonishing 102 openings including a seat on the Supreme Court for the next president, in earnest hopes that president would be a Republican. Indeed, some of them – including supposed good guy John McCain – threatened to continue holding up appointments after the election if Clinton won. Better to have no judges at all as Democrat appointed judges. Now, Trump is packing those seats with unabashedly, proudly, arrogantly anti-LGB/T nominees and with virtually no exceptions Republicans in the Senate are unanimously affirming them. These (straight, white, cis) men will be sitting on these courts, in many case, for as much as 40 years or more putting every roadblock they can find between us and our equality and when their decisions are appealed to SCOTUS, there will sit a smirking Neal Gorsuch to uphold them.
Let’s be CRYSTAL clear: If Merrick Garland got the confirmation he was completely entitled to under every historic precedent, none of those three choice are in any doubt. When you, conservative transwoman, voted Republican for Trump and for your Senator YOU helped make this happen ,and you gave cover to bigots to pretend they were not voting for a bigot. But they did.
And so did you. YOU. You know who you are (and I’m not just talking about Caitlyn Jenner here) and you need someone to put their finger in their face and tell you just what you are. You are my enemy, and the enemy of every LGB/T person in this country, if not on the entire planet. You are a traitor, you are deplorable, you are reprehensible, you are a brainwashed indoctrinated puppet of PEOPLE WHO HATE YOU. When official representitives of our government communicate to the trans people via political and judicial decisions that we are second class citizens not entitled to equal standing under the law with “normal” people, and some of us go out and do ourselves harm in despair that blood
You, and all the other abject fools who thought that a tax cut, or one more gun, or the fictional crusade against abortion, or what other shallow reason you used to convince yourself to VOTE FOR PEOPLE WHO HATE YOU. Frankly, you displayed such an absence of sound judgment that the rest of us can’t trust you to read a damned clock face, let alone a politician. Tragically, it’s only going to get worse. Winter is coming. Real people will suffer because people like you made the wrong choice, and it will now be decades before the damage can be repaired.
Shame on you.
(and yes if I was not clear, I write this in the sincere hope that you, gentle reader, will recognize and thing of someone you know to whom this directly applies and rub their noses in it. I offer this as an essay available to those who are not confident in their ability to articulate these thoughts. You have not only my permission but my encouragement to use this as a way to “get in their face” because if they are still voting Republican, someone surely needs to)
